Srila Prabhupada narrates this story of sparrow in purport of BG 6.24:-
sa niścayena yoktavyo
yogo 'nirviṇṇa-cetasā
saṅkalpa-prabhavān kāmāṁs
tyaktvā sarvān aśeṣataḥ
manasaivendriya-grāmaṁ
viniyamya samantatah
One should engage oneself in the practice of yoga with undeviating determination and faith. One should abandon, without exception, all material desires born of false ego and thus control all the senses on all sides by the mind.
Once upon a time there was a sparrow who laid down eggs at the shore of the ocean.
The eggs were taken away by waves of the ocean.
So little sparrow when came to know about this she pleaded to the ocean to please return the eggs. But ocean didn’t respond.
So sparrow warned the ocean that if it will not return the egg then she will empty the ocean.
Ocean still did not responded. So sparrow started her work of emptying the ocean by taking drops of water in her little beak.
Everyone know that it looks almost impossible task but little sparrow was determined & kept on working at it.
Garuda, lord Vishnu’s carrier bird came to know about it.Garuda wanted to help little sister sparrow out of compassion as Garuda is also devotee & can’t see anyone in distress.(Para Dukha Dukhi)
Garuda asked the ocean to return the eggs of the sparrow otherwise he will take task of emptying the ocean in his hands. So the ocean returned the eggs to sparrow.
This is how devotees show mercy upon conditioned souls.
This story explains how to be determined.
Srila Rupa Goswami In updeshamrut verse 3 also advises us to be enthusiastic ,determined & perseverant while performing devotional service to Krishna.
utsāhān niścayād dhairyāt tat tat karma-pravartanāt
saṅga-tyāgāt satovṛtteḥ ṣaḍbhir bhaktiḥprasidhyati
"The process of bhakti-yoga can be executed successfully with full-hearted enthusiasm, perseverance, and determination by following the prescribed duties in the association of devotees and by engaging completely in activities of goodness."
