One cannot leave the taste for sense enjoyment unless and until he is engaged in Krishna Consciousness. Like a patient, when he is suffering from any disease, a doctore gives him/her certain prescription to follow. Even though the patient doesn't likes, if he follows it, he gradually becomes cured of his disease. In the same way, if one is engaged in the regulative principles of devotional service, he will also gradually becomes cure of his disease. As one advances in Krishna Consciousness, this material taste automatically becomes pale to him. Like the patient, even though he leaves the enjoyable food items, but his taste remains for it, similarly, if a person is not engaged in a higher taste or Kṛṣṇa Consciousness, his taste for materialism will not go. One has to take the higher taste to leave attachment for the lower taste.
